  • Alejandro Moy: Potentate of Argentine Polo Painters

Given that Argentina reigns supreme in the global polo community, it should come as no surprise that it boasts artists who excel in celebrating the sport of princes. Only one, however, has become a household name in the polo world, and not only on home turf, but worldwide.

  • For the Harriott Brothers, the Past is Another Country

Those of us in love with the English language, among whom I count myself, are indebted to English author L.P. Hartley for the celebrated opening sentence of his 1953 novel, The Go-Between: "The past is another country; they do things differently there,"

Hartley's aphorism came to mind as I read an interview with Juan Carlos Harriot in the Yearbook of the Argentine Polo Pony Breeders Association, founded 27 years ago to promote the breed, Polo Argentino, now bred by some 600 registered studs.

  • Javier Tanoira: Reflections on Argentine Polo

Javier Tanoira's Reflections on Argentine Polo, published last June, brings to mind the 18th century English poet Alexander Pope for his immortal line, What oft was thought but ne'er so well expressed.

Reflections is a critique of the malaise which now afflicts polo at its peak, the high-goal Argentine game, coupled with a truckload of proposals to change the rules (or return to existing rules, since abandoned, as played before patron polo took hold) to recover the magic which Tanoira insists the game has lost.

  • Polo History, Ancient Origins By Chris Ashton

The hill tribes of northern India, who bequeathed polo to their British rulers, were the custodians of a sport which had been played at least 2,500 years before at the court of the Persian Emperor Darius 1 (550-486 B.C.). (…)

In succeeding centuries, as armies ranged back and forth in retreat and conquest across the continent, polo was adopted by cavalries as a training exercise for mounted warfare, and by kings and emperors, shahs and sultans, khans and caliphs as a court pleasure.
